The Grand Junction city council plans to wait until April to appoint someone to fill the position of mayor after the sudden resignation via text message by mayor Dave Kersey Feb. 19.
Mayor pro tem Teresa Lansman will cover the duties of mayor until the council appoints a mayor at its April 10 meeting. Residents who are interested in being considered for the position can submit letters of interest at the city office.
According to city clerk Katherine Thomas, the legal notice of the intent to appoint will be posted later this month to meet timing requirements. If the council appoints a sitting council person to the mayor position, the council will appoint someone to fill the vacant council position in May.
Kersey resigned in frustration about what he sees as the influence some persons who live outside the city limits have over some council members. Those influences have slowed progress in attaining goals Kersey had for the city.
The mayor’s position is up for election in November.
